TY - JOUR AB - The fact that steel ropes are subject to corrosion and consequent shortening of their service life is by no means a new problem. It is not, however, always appreciated that many new problems have arisen in recent times, due to the extension of rope usage into fields of application where corrosion resistance and prevention is a problem. This article, which describes certain aspects of the corrosion work at the Blakeney, Norfolk, testing station, draws attention to these problems and a system which has been devised to combine laboratory investigations with a form of field test, and the value of the data which has accrued.
