TY - JOUR AB - In 1980 diesel oil will cost the National Freight Corporation about £42 million, and other energy requirements an additional £71 million, representing an important part of its total operating costs. Any worthwhile savings that can be made will have a marked effect on profitability. Since the relative cost of diesel oil is likely to increase it is necessary to look at other aspects of the operation in order to bring about these savings. In this paper the author looks at three principal areas: methods of improving fuel consumption; an examination of the use of alternative fuels to find out if any of these are technically feasible; and to examine methods of fuel saving and energy in the operating branches of NFC companies.
