TY - JOUR AB - The nature and aims of testing have been an object of study in the United States since the 'thirties, and yet in Britain, even though tests and examinations are as much a feature of school life as they are in America, very little attention is paid to this subject. Most teachers test at frequent intervals and try to discover the progress of their students and then, perhaps for reports or perhaps to satisfy ONC requirements, all marks are added together and a final assessment given for each student. Any reading of the literature available will reveal that there is no foundation for this practice and in fact much more information can be made available from tests if the correct techniques are used.
