Abstract

The ADONIS concept of storing journals in machine readable form has a long history. In a little under 10 years the project has moved from the idea of a costly system for 3,500 titles and using 30 cm optical discs to a trial on compact disc. Requests for copies from 219 high‐use titles in the field of biomedicine and published during 1987 and 1988 are being satisfied from the discs by major document delivery centres in Europe, USA, Japan, Mexico and Australia participating in the 2‐year trial. This article reviews the history of ADONIS with particular reference to the BLDSC's involvement and covers the current trial: a later article will continue the story with a report on the day‐to‐day operation of the ADONIS service.
