TY - JOUR AB - Some of us who serve on governing bodies in colleges sometimes ask ourselves what sort of function we should be performing. Is it one that has any significance? Is it worth while? Some governors rarely attend; others rarely open their mouths; others talk a lot, but often to no great purpose. The chairman is, it is true, a key figure and is constantly consulted by senior members of the staff. He reports back, and the rest of the governors normally acquiesce. There is, in fact, little cohesion in a body that meets on average three times a year and that has, in truth, little positive to offer. So are governors really necessary?
