There are eight chapters each written by a recognised specialist in the appropriate field so the writing style does vary from the easy to read to the not so easy, especially if you are new to the topic area.

The chapters encompass basics such as the structure and function of the human body through occupational disease and hygiene; radiation; noise and vibration; workplace pollution; lighting, and managing ergonomics. At a first glance not all of these will seem very relevant to disaster or emergency management, but with the emergence of the “sue them” culture it does seem appropriate for emergency planners to have an understanding of this topic. Several of the issues that are covered in this text are highly relevant when using volunteers in disaster conditions and emergency planners had better know the relevant legislation and how volunteers and disaster workers should be protected.
