Discusses what social learning is and the role played by social media in supporting it. Underlines that social media are becoming increasingly important in training and learning in the USA and emphasizes the need for trainers to understand how to use them. Sets out the revised competency model that has been developed by the American Society for Training and Development to take into account the developments within social media and to incorporate them in training practice. A sidebar summarizes the knowledge and skills that training professionals need to be able to use social media effectively. Reviews the organizational barriers that may obstruct the use of social media to support training and learning, and indicates how to overcome these. Argues that the social media open up the opportunities for trainers to develop their training practice and that they should embrace these.ISSN: 1535-7740Article type: ViewpointReference: 40AR881
