Purpose – To present insights from an in-depth case study of a successful high-performance R&D team (HPRDT) at IBM’s Semiconductor Research and Development Center (SRDC) in Fishkill, New York. Design/methodology/approach – A review of the literature of the influence of competitive pressure and consequent technological challenge on the performance of R&D teams is presented. Reports the results of applying case narrative and iterative interviewing as an exploratory tool to provide evidence for inductive theory-building of critical success factors (CSFs) for high-performance teams.Article Type: Case studyISSN: 0895-6308Reference: 38AS024
