Purpose – Updates the McKinsey study that was published ten years ago and was entitled, “The War for Talent”. Urges organizations to take a strategic approach to talent management, arguing that demographic change, globalization and the rise of knowledge workers offer challenges and opportunities that make this a necessity. Design/methodology/approach – Reviews the extent of the talent management challenge facing human resource managers and advises them on how to handle it. Illustrates the advice with brief examples of major UK firms. Findings – Underlines that human resource management has a critical role in managing talent. Suggests that human resource managers focus on four aspects of talent management – ensuring that talent management strategies focus on all employees rather than just top-performing managers; developing and communicating employee value propositions for the different types of employee; rotating selected high-performing employees across the organization to give them experience of working in other divisions and locations; and ensuring that talent management strategies are in line with the organization’s business strategy. Originality/value – Offers general guidance on talent management.ISSN: 1358-6297Reference: 37AX794
