EPPIC takes scoping opportunity in China

EPPIC takes scoping opportunity in China

Keywords: Electronics industry, China

In June 2005 the EPPIC Faraday partnership co-ordinated both a DTI Global Watch Service Scoping mission and an EPSRC INTERACT looking at Chinese research in the key areas of electronics and photonics.

The DTI mission will comprise representatives from TWI, Bookham Inc. and Filtronic Ltd along with the DTI's International Technology Promoter, Simon Duan. The aim of this DTI mission was to identify and assess the current state of electronic and photonic packaging research within China. Emphasis was placed on the regions of the Pearl River Delta, Wuhan and Shanghai.

The mission looked at the key technologies being pursued within China and compared them with activities in the UK. The information gathered will enable UK companies to benchmark themselves against the latest developments within China and to identify key technologies for future development.

In parallel with the DTI mission will be an EPPIC Faraday Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) mission led by Greenwich University. This is supported through the EPSRC's INTERACT scheme with the hope of initiating international collaboration with key players in packaging technologies.

Dr Chris Beck of TWI, who led the DTI mission, said: “China has become a major force in the electronic and photonic sectors and is investing considerably in research and development. EPPIC, through both these missions, will help build links between Chinese and UK companies and research institutions as well as identifying the key technology areas where the UK needs to invest”.

EPSRC's Dr Naomi Webber said, “The visit benefited both UK academic and industrial partners in an important and fast-moving research area. Working in parallel with the DTI also reinforces the importance of international collaboration in this area”.

A report on the findings of the DTI mission was launched at a dissemination event in September 2005.
