Shipley Ronal announces restructuring of European manufacturing

Keywords: IPC, Surface finishing

On 26 April 1999 Shipley Company announced the results of a three-month review of operations for its newly formed Shipley Ronal Division. In Europe, this includes a decision to transfer its Additive Manufacturing process, part of the LeaRonal operations in Buxton, UK, to facilities in Coventry, UK and Lucerne, Switzerland.

The process being relocated to the Coventry and Lucerne facilities manufactures chemicals for electronics and industrial finishing end-uses. "In the last few years, our industry has seen significant globalisation and consolidation, and we owe it to our customers to ensure that our production and distribution processes are as efficient as possible," stated Terry Copeland, President of Shipley's European organisation.

Other operations remaining at Buxton, including the laboratories, precious metals refinery and inks manufacture, are not affected by the announcement. The transfer will result in the loss of approximately 70 manufacturing and related positions at the Buxton plant.

The company said it wanted to acknowledge the significant contributions made over the years by the employees affected by the decision. The decisions taken were necessary to ensure that Shipley Ronal can compete effectively in an increasingly competitive global marketplace, but it could not overlook the immediate impact in Buxton. It would do all it could to ensure that its employees were treated with the level of respect they had earned, and would make every effort to make the transition as smooth as possible. A number of new jobs would be created at the Coventry facility, and displaced Buxton employees would obviously be considered first for these positions.

The Shipley Ronal division was formed in January 1999 by the global merger of Shipley's printed wiring board business with LeaRonal, following the acquisition of LeaRonal by Shipley's parent Rohm and Haas Inc.
