Selected papers from HES 2010
Article Type: Preface From: COMPEL: COMPEL: The International Journal for Computation and Mathematics in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Volume 30, Issue 5
The series of HES conferences started in 1998, and was followed by the editions of 2001, 2004 and 2007, becoming a traditional meeting for scientists and engineers dealing with the development and application of the technologies which make use of electromagnetic fields for industrial heating and electromagnetic processing of materials.
The main developments in these fields in the last three years are connected with the increasing use of numerical methods for the solution of multi-physics problems, which allow a better understanding of the mutual interaction of the electromagnetic, thermal, phase transition, mechanical and fluid-dynamics phenomena which affect technological processes. This allows the designer to choose more properly the process parameters and, as a consequence, to design more cost-effective installations, suitable for manufacturing better quality products.
RF and microwave processes have assumed an increasing importance in our conference and this is demonstrated by the increasing number and quality of papers dealing with this topic being presented during the conference.
A very attractive field of research represented in the conference is EPM, i.e. the use of electromagnetic fields in the processing of materials. Some examples of applications of EPM are the flow control of molten metals, the EM shaping and forming, the continuous casting of steel, and crystal growth. Special attention is given to biomedical applications where the interaction between medicine and engineering is producing very interesting results in the battle against cancer.
Some numbers: 92 papers were presented by authors coming from 21 different countries. The selected papers chosen for publication in this special issue of COMPEL, after a peer review procedure, represent a general overview of the contents of this conference. We realize that with the limited number of papers, it is not possible to give a full understanding of different fields of applications that the HES conference deals with, but we hope that this special issue will be sufficient to create in the reader the curiosity to delve more deeply into this fascinating and challenging field of research.
