It is a great pleasure to introduce the special issue of COMPEL with selected papers presented at the 21st Symposium on Electromagnetic Phenomena in Nonlinear Circuits (EPNC’10) held from 29 June to 2 July 2010 in Dortmund and Essen, Germany. The 21st EPNC Symposium was organized by University of Dortmund – Institute of Electrical Drives and Mechatronics, Polish Academy of Science and Polish Society for Theoretical and Applied Electrical Engineering – Poznan Section. Professor Stefan Kulig from University of Dortmund was Chairman of the Organizing Committee.

The First Symposium on Electromagnetic Phenomena in Nonlinear Circuits took place in Poznan´, Poland in November of 1972. The first 11 conferences were local events. Nevertheless, speakers from other countries also participated to the various EPNCs. The last ten conferences were international with proceedings published in English language. In the beginning, the selected papers of EPNC conferences were introduced into the regular issues of COMPEL. After EPNC in 2004 in Poznan´, for a first time the selected and extended papers of EPNC were published as a special issue of the COMPEL journal. The current issue of COMPEL is the fourth special issue with selected and extended EPNC papers.

The aim of the EPNC’10 was to present the recent advances in the analysis and synthesis of nonlinear electric and magnetic circuits and nonlinear optics as well as to provide the forum for discussion on applications of nonlinear phenomena in electrical engineering. The EPNC conferences are intended to be an opportunity to exchange ideas and experience for specialists as well as young PhD students in electromagnetic field modelling, electric drives, electronics, electrical machines, electric and magnetic materials. Topics of the EPNC 2010 symposium in Dortmund/Essen included:

  1. 1.

    Ferromagnetics and magnetic circuits:

    • Theory and application of nonlinear phenomena in ferromagnetic elements and structures containing such elements.

    • Electromagnetic field calculations in nonlinear problems.

    • Modelling of material properties and the numerical treatment of hysteresis, anisotropy, permanent magnets.

  2. 2.

    Semiconductors and nonlinear electric circuits:

    • Electric circuits with nonlinear elements.

    • Modelling and control of power electronic devices and converters.

    • Modelling and simulation of nonlinear electronic elements and systems with such elements.

  3. 3.

    Nonlinear optics and wave propagation:

    • Nonlinear optical phenomena and devices.

    • Modelling of nonlinear space-time electrodynamics.

    • Modelling of nonlinearities in optical waveguides.

At the EPNC in Dortmund/Essen, 76 papers were presented by participants coming from 15 countries. Two-page version of all papers were published in EPNC’10 Conference Proceedings. A limited, in a peer-review process, selected number of 25 papers in extended version were chosen by EPNC’10 Editorial Board and COMPEL Guest Editors for the publication in this fourth special issue of the COMPEL journal.

We hope that this issue of COMPEL will provide various interesting new information to the readers.
