2011 was a very good year for CDI. Hetty and I owe a ton of gratitude to our Editorial Team (Professors Tom Stone, Julia Richardson, and Nikos Bozionelos) and the Advisory Board Members for their commitment and service to the journal. We thank the ad-hoc reviewers for their time, talent, thoughtful and timely reviews, all of which makes it possible for us to consistently achieve the goal of providing feedback to authors within 40 days of initial submission. We express our gratitude and appreciation to Nancy Rolph, our Publisher and to Catherine Smith, Assistant Publisher.

2011 also brought significant changes and new developments. In late June, CDI was added to ScholarOne’s Manuscript Central. This system offers “EarlyCite” functionality, which in turn will help to raise the journal’s impact factor as articles will become citable at a much earlier stage in the publication process. We expect the journal’s initial impact factor to be announced in Summer 2012. In September 2011, Hetty announced her resignation as Co-Editor of the journal to assume the role of Head of her Department at Maastricht University. Also in September, on behalf of the Careers Division of the Academy of Management, Dr Svetlana Khapova submitted a letter to the Association of Business Schools (ABS) requesting that CDI be re-evaluated and assigned to a higher grade. The request for a higher grade is based upon several factors including:

  1. 1.

    the quality of articles we have published over the last four years;

  2. 2.

    the higher number of citations of those articles relative to articles published in journals in our space that are assigned to higher grades than CDI by ABS; and

  3. 3.

    the reputation of authors who continue to publish in CDI.

I want to thank our Associate Editor Nikos Bozionelos for compiling the necessary statistics and for helping to make the case for CDI. I am optimistic that CDI will be reassigned to a higher grade by ABS. Such a reassignment will tremendously benefit the journal and our European contributors, associate editors, authors, and reviewers.

I am pleased to report that over the last four years, the number of submissions has increased and the acceptance rate decreased. Specifically, submissions are up 20 percent from last year, and the acceptance rate is hovering just below 19 percent. These changes have resulted in publication of high quality articles; and, we fully expect this positive trend to continue into the future. CDI is now a serious scholarly journal.

While our focus remains publishing mainstream career research, we are very much interested in research dealing with Human Resource Management and Organizational Behavior topics with implications for careers and managing careers. CDI will continue to publish theoretical papers, review articles that offer new insights and research directions, and empirical studies. Acceptance decisions are based solely on the merits of the manuscript and no preference is given to one topic or methodology or level of analysis over another. We intend to continue publishing Special Issues on topics dealing with important issues, concerns and emerging trends. Readers and prospective authors are encouraged to contact us with their ideas for Special Issues.

As I begin my fifth year as Editor, I miss my co-editor, Hetty van Emmerik. She has helped CDI achieve its current stature, and I intend to continue the rapid rise of CDI within the ranks of scholarly journals. While I am saddened by her leaving the journal, as co-editor, we remain good friends and frequent co-authors, and I know that she wishes me and the editorial team nothing but the best. Hetty, you will be missed. Thanks for all your contributions to CDI.

I am looking forward to a terrific 2012 for CDI.
