The Naperville City Council, IL, has created a situation for the library that is challenging, to say the least. The council has announced that it will cap funding for the building of a new facility at $15.8 million, which is $2.2 million shy what the city had said the library would receive. According to Board President Bruce Knopp, the $15.8 will not be sufficient for the new library. On the other hand, if they modify the project to fit the reduced budget, the facility will probably not be adequate for the community's needs. This appears to be a situation in which cutting back may not be the wise and Knopp plans to fight for the original agreement. He has stated that the board is "committed" to the original plan and would be "going back to council to get what we've needed from day one." The building was scheduled to open next year, but the funding problems could delay it up to two years. Available at http://www.libraryjournal.com/articles/news/thisweek/20001009_16223.asp
