The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) has awarded $135.3 million in grants to libraries in the US and its territories in the second round of funding under the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA). The grants are distributed to state libraries according to a population-based formula; in turn state libraries distribute the funds to libraries according to a five-year plan submitted to IMLS. California received the lion's share, $7.3 million; New York was next with $4.2 million, and Florida received $3.4 million. LSTA is part of the Museum and Library Services Act of 1996, which was created to promote access to learning and information resources in all types of libraries.

A $1.5 million gift from the Buhl foundation, an organization serving Pittsburgh and Allegheny County has made it possible to establish the first chair for library and information science at the University of Pittsburgh's School of Information Science. This is one of the few chairs for library and information science in the United States.
