Small-scale food producers
It is a pleasure to be asked to develop the editorial for this special issue. As a past case study editor for the BFJ, and still on its Editorial Board, I have seen many case studies and articles created and expanded in the food area.
This selection of papers has been a pleasure to read and edit. The reviewers have all been serious and experienced academics and it was excellent to note that their comments were efficiently taken on board by the authors.
The papers have been accepted from across the world and from academics from some of the most prestigious universities working in the food arena.
The first paper from Gombay (McGill) looks at cultural and social issues in a Canadian province, with special attention given to the specific linguistic group and their subsistence in their traditional aspects and their food chain.
The second paper also looks at the local adaptation of food and examines the importance of local product. Reinhart from Norway does an excellent job in identifying the local characteristics and the local tastes and the relevance of modern economic practices in creating the success factor.
The third paper from Riseth also from Norway (Nordic Sami Institute), follows the second paper excellently and examines the profitability of food development within a specific area highlighted by the second paper, and the importance of a free economy.
The next paper, by a team of management scholars, discusses the small business counter-revolution in food production and retailing. The final paper from Dobbs and Rowling expands on the principle of change and is a pleasant conclusion to the work.
It has been a pleasure to be involved and I hope that the reader finds the material as useful as I have. I believe that the materials presented are useful not only for the practitioner but also for academics.
