Food regulation burden on small food businesses

The Food Standards Agency has established a task force to examine the burdens of food regulations on small food businesses.

The Chairman is Dr Richard Harding, head of the Agency's Food Chain Strategy Division. The other members are: Professor Tim Lang, Professor of Food Policy at Thames Valley University; Dorothy Craig, a member of the Food Advisory Panel and National Federation of Consumer Groups; Sir Julian Rose, an organic farmer and Chairman of the Association of Unpasturised Milk Producers, and Zmira Hornstein a former government economist.

"I announced at the Agency's first Board meeting on 25 May that we intended to set up this small task force. I am pleased that in such a short time we have been able to find people with such a vast range of experience," said Sir John.

The terms of reference are in relation to the Agency's mission to protect the health of the public in relation to food:

  to evaluate quantitatively the impact of food safety requirements and other food regulations on the economic viability of small food businesses;

• •

  to consider the long-term impact of the above on consumer choice; and

• •

  to consider what beneficial changes might be made from the consumer and small business point of view.

The task force will report to the Board by the end of the year.
