The Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA) was formed in 1983 by the merger of the Chinese‐American Librarians Association (established in Chicago in 1973) and the Chinese Librarians Association (established at Stanford University in 1974). As part of the merger agreement, the name Chinese American Librarians Association became the English language name of the combined organisation.

Their Web site contains the sections one now expects from a professional association, i.e. officers, committees, chapters (that is, geographical branches), the annual programme, awards, publications, and an online application form. The site’s pages have a simple yet attractive layout, the designer has made good use of frames, and the site as a whole loads quickly because it avoids unnecessary graphics. One of CALA’s publications, available from this Web site is an e‐journal that has now reached issue number 11.
