Held at the Institute of Oriental Culture of the University of Tokyo, the Documentation Center provides document services for the Institute. The homepage is available in English and Japanese. Through the use of a database system constructed in 1994, the Center publishes a Catalogue of Contemporary Chinese Books held at the Institute. The Catalogue lists the titles of nearly 40,000 Chinese books published between 1912 and 1990, and all of the books are stored in the Institute library. Materials are catalogued using Pinyin for transliterating Chinese characters and follows the Chinese Library Classification system that is commonly used in the PRC. The database is searchable by author, title, subject and keywords. Special Japanese language software is required to view the database. The homepage was last updated on 17 September 1996, and lots of information is still missing from the page, including a history of the Center and biographical information on its staff. Nevertheless, a diversion to the homepages of the Institute of Oriental Culture and the University of Tokyo, the parent institution of the Center, provides background information and links to comprehensive Asian newspapers and Asian studies sites.
