Library leadership changes in Taiwan

The Library Association of China (LAC) held its 45th annual conference on 7 December 1997, at the National Central Library in Taipei, and elected its new president, board of directors and board of control. Dr Margaret C. Fung took over the presidency from Dr James S.C. Hu who, during his tenure, made a number of contributions to the profession: the White Paper for the Development of Librarianship in Taiwan in the 21st Century, work on passage of the Draft Library Law by the Ministry of Education, and publication of the journal and newsletter of the LAC in print and electronic editions. The Library Association of China Global Information Network also went online at http://blue.lins.fju.edu.tw/lac during his presidency. The new president, Dr Fung, has served as professor and library director of National Taiwan Normal University and professor of library and information science at National Taiwan University. She is currently professor at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science of the National Chengchi University and Civil Service Commissioner of the Examination Yuan. Her major interests are in university libraries, library automation and international co-operation.

On 10 April 1998, Dr Fang-rung Juang was sworn in by Dr K.C. Yang, Vice-minister of Education, as director of the National Central Library. Dr Juang previously served as chief of the information section, National Commission for Research, Development and Evaluation; section chief, counselor and director, Traditional Arts Center, National Council for Cultural Planning and Development; and director of the Civil Affairs Bureau, Taipei City Government. He is currently council director of the Library Association of China and associate professor of library and information science at National Taiwan University.
