ALCTS Preconference on International Cataloguing

26 June 1998, Washington, DC

The Cataloging and Classification Section (CCS) of the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) presents What in the World: Cataloging on an International Scale. This day-long institute will be held on 26 June 1998 in Washington, DC as a preconference to the American Library Association's annual conference. Presented by the CCS Cataloging Committee: Description and Access, the preconference is co-sponsored by the ALA International Relations Round Table, ACRL Western European Specialists Section/Germanists Discussion Group, CCS Committee on Cataloging Asian and African Materials, ALCTS/LITA/RUSA MARBI, and LITA/ALCTS CCS Authority Control in the Online Environment Interest Group.

The programme will provide an overview of cataloguing and systems standards development in the international context, and an update on recent activities. The programme will demonstrate how the various international efforts contribute to the ideal of universal bibliographic control and shared cataloging on the international level.

Cataloguers, administrators, library and information science educators and students, vendors and OPAC system designers should find this presentation of particular interest. Faculty for the preconference include: Joan Aliprand, Research Libraries Group; John Byrum, Library of Congress; Daniel Kinney, State University of New York at Stony Brook; Olivia Madison, Iowa State University; Ralph W. Manning, National Library of Canada; Sally McCallum, Library of Congress; Monika Muennich, University of Heidelberg; Barbara Tillett, Library of Congress; Ingrid Parent, National Library of Canada; and Glenn Patton, OCLC.

Fees for the preconference are $135 for ALCTS personal members, $185 for ALA personal members, and $235 for non-members. A brochure and complete registration information are on the ALCTS webpage at http://www.ala.org/alcts/events/preconferences98, or contact Yvonne McLean at ymclean@ala.org.
