Kwame Bekoe, who graduated from the University of Surrey (UniS) in 2004 with a BEng Honours in Aerospace Engineering, has recently been awarded a prestigious N E Rowe certificate of merit by the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) after presenting his final year project to the society. He collected the award at the Sopwith Lecture recently in London.

Kwame's final year project was to investigate the scope of high performance and price reduction for modern sailplane design. During my project, I had the opportunity to carry out wind tunnel manufacturing and testing of a wing section, use a selection of modern computer packages for design and aerodynamic analysis, I also had the unique opportunity to be given a tour of a world renowned glider manufacturer in Germany by the chief designer, which led to networking opportunities with renowned airfoil designers in Holland, and some of the best competition pilots based at Lashem gliding club, UK.

Kwame comments, “The experience gained throughout this project opened my eyes to different facets in the industry and gave me good engineering substantiation to compile a good project, covering broad aspects of the sailplane. I was then given the opportunity to present my project to a panel of judges from the RAeS, Farnborough branch, in which I was awarded a national certificate of merit for my achievements. The final year aerospace individual project gave me a great opportunity to dig deeper into various aspects of aerospace engineering”.
