Boeing contract for qualification of HiPPAG on F-15E AircraftKeywords: Ultra Electronics, Defence

Ultra Electronics recently announced that its weapon systems division has been awarded a contract by Boeing St Louis. This contract is for the qualification of its HiPPAG 500 series on-board compressors on the Boeing F-15E aircraft.

HiPPAG 500 is a miniature, electronically controlled, pure air compressor and filtration system, designed as an onboard energy source for the pneumatic ejection of bombs and missiles.

HiPPAG 500 will be integrated into the Pneumatic Weapon Ejection System (PWES), developed by the Boeing Phantom Works R&D division. By using HiPPAG 500 in place of traditional pyrotechnic components, Phantom Works was able to design the PWES as a simpler, lighter, cleaner-operating ejector rack that provides a higher performance and hundreds more firings between maintenance checks.

Qualification testing of the PWES/HiPPAG system on the F-15E is being funded by the USAF under the Commercial Operational and Support Savings initiative [COSSI) program.

Ultra Electronics also reports that its Controls Division has commissioned the first of five Beech 1900D Prop-Power propeller de-icing systems with CommutAir of Plattsburgh, NY State, USA. CommutAir is the launch customer for this propeller de-icing technology. After an initial period of in-service operation to confirm system performance, CommutAir intends to install the system fleet-wide.

The supplemental type certification (STC) has been supported by Raytheon Aircraft, which intends to offer Prop-Power as standard on the Beech 1900D, upon successful completion of field evaluation. Ultra Electronics worked with Celsius Aerotech of Nashville, Tennessee, USA to achieve STC approval. Celsius was responsible for system installation and FAA approval. Ultra anticipates achieving Transport Canada, CAA and JAA approval for future retrofit sales in the rest of the world.
