Air traffic over the UK is increasing rapidly and more than £100 million is invested in new and updated air traffic control equipment every year to deal with growing number of aircraft. This equipment needs to be thoroughly assessed to ensure that it meets the needs of the aviation industry without compromising safety.

AEA Technology plc will supply industry experts in aviation safety and risk assessment to National Air Traffic Services Limited (NATS) under a new five-year framework agreement.

The AEA Technology staff will provide safety management advice and assistance during the design, implementation and maintenance of new air traffic control equipment. They will also help to develop the safety cases, which demonstrate that the very high standards of safety in the UK Air Traffic Control System are being maintained.

AEA Technology's consulting business has been providing support to NATS for several years and the new agreement provides a more efficient and effective purchasing structure to ensure that highly-qualified staff can be sent to NATS sites quickly.

Peter Bone of AEA Technology said:

Safety is the air traffic service's first priority. We employ some of Europe's leading people in this field and the new agreement does away with many of the administrative hurdles that can hinder the rapid deployment of key staff.
