High levels of accuracy and repeatability are said to be available from the new Kingsbury-Kondia HM-2010 bridge type vertical machining centre from Geo. Kingsbury MHP Machines, Gloucester, UK (Plate 8). The company considers that the format is proving increasingly popular in the aerospace and tool making sectors where full support of a long Y-axis allows accuracy to be maintained across large workpieces.

The HM-2010 is stated to offer X-axis travel of 2,000mm and Y-axis travel of 1000mm, providing spindle access to all four corners of the worktable. Z-axis travel is 510mm but maximum spindle nose to table clearance is 660mm. Rapid traverse rate is believed to be fast for such a large machine at 24m/min.

A 17.5kW spindle drive provides high power for heavy metal removal rates. The spindle itself is ISO 40 taper and through-tool coolant facilities can be provided as an option with six bar, 20 bar or 30 bar pressure. Up to 20 tools can be accommodated in the tool magazine. Spindle speeds are variable in the range 100 to 6,000rpm; an 8,000rpm option is available.

Control is by either the Heidenhain TNC 426 or Fanuc 18iMA digital CNC systems, with ballscrew drive to the axes via digital servo drives. Feedback from all linear axes is by Heidenhain linear scales allowing positioning accuracy of 0.01mm with 0.008mm repeatability and resolution of 0.001mm. A rotary fourth axis is available for machining complex workpieces in a single setup.
