Avalon adds 'Ultra-wide bandwidth' SIGINT cassette data recorder
Avalon adds "Ultra-wide bandwidth" SIGINT cassette data recorder
Keywords Avalon Electronics, Data capture
Avalon Electronics Ltd reports that it has extended the bandwidth of its S-VHS cassette data recorder range to an industry-first 18 MHz. Three new AE3200FL series units (Plate 6) are aimed at high-end ELINT, COMINT and telemetry data capture applications where wide bandwidths and excellent dynamic range are primary requirements.

Three variants are offered. AE3220FL records a single analog bandwidth of DC to 18MHz. AE3240FL offers the choice of recording either a single 18MHz channel or three 6MHz channels while AE3250FL records either one channel of 18MHz or two 9MHz channels. The units can be used for recording the wideband IF output of sophisticated Communications Receivers (via an IF/tape converter), or a number of parallel baseband signals.
The new units are an extension of Avalon's 3, 8 and 12MHz family of S-VHS-based cassette recorders. The ultra-reliable AE3000 series is now said to be deployed on platforms around the world in a variety of mission critical data capture roles. Recording time per professional grade SE-180 (ST-120) cassette is 30 minutes with a broadband signal/noise ratio of 32dB (pk/rms).
AE3200FL is designed as a self-contained, go-anywhere system which can be relied on to collect data under the most adverse field conditions. The self-contained 176 255 500mm (6.9 10 20in) unit includes a flexible power unit and a complete suite of BITE (built-in test equipment) facilities.
The MTBF specification (based on actual field usage) is reportedly > 50,000 hours (power on) and > 8,000 hours (operating – including head wear). Avalon offers an industry-first 5,000 hour/three year no-nonsense warranty.
In addition to its use as a primary platform data recorder, AE3200 can be configured as a back-up device for Avalon's recently announced AE7000 50MHz disk-based analog data recorder.
