A new range of micrograin solid carbide mills and drills launched by Widia Valenite are said to be up to five times more productive than earlier types of tools available for high speed machining applications.

Says Widia Valenite's Milton Keynes-based general manager, Andrew Tanner, "Widia Top Mill S (Plate 1) and Widia Top Drill S (Plate 2) are the company's response to the challenge of breaching the barriers to high speed machining by developing tools which, as well as slashing cutting time, provide better performance all round, thereby reducing both tool and manufacturing costs".

The key to this desirable end is the adoption of specially formulated titanium aluminium nitride (TiAlN) and titanium nitride (TiN) coatings which are applied to the well-proven K20 carbide core material. Optimum performance for any given task is made easier to achieve with a range of seven different types of high-performance mills - end, slot and radius - to choose from.

Likewise, the series of drills, which are available in steps of just 0.1mm diameter from 3.0mm up to 20mm diameter, can be ordered in either one of two cutting-edge geometries.

Recommended cutting speeds for the Top Mill S range can be as high as 160m/min for use on hardened carbon steels, or 140m/min for hardened high alloy steels, dropping only to a maximum of 130m/min for stainless materials. Aerospace materials such as Al.Mg alloys can have much higher cutting speeds applied, right up to 600m/min which, combined with high average feed per tooth capabilities, offer the user high productivity without sacrificing reliability or surface finish.
