Acal's Defence and Aerospace Division has introduced a range of hi-rel in-line cable connectors offering between three and six pins. Although originally developed for medical equipment, the connectors are now finding a wide range of applications, including lap-top computer connectors for use in civil aircraft.
Manufactured by IEH Corporation of the US, the connectors use hyperboloid contacts to provide very low insertion forces coupled with high contact integrity and a mating cycle life of over 100,000 cycles. Contacts are rated at 3A, with contact resistance of less than 5 milliohms.
The mate is secured with two lock tabs located 180° apart. Demating is achieved by a simple 30° twist against a lightly pre-loaded torsion spring, using the clear directional arrows on the knurled barrel of the connector. The connectors incorporate visual alignment dots to assist engagement and an audible "snap" is heard on mating. These features simplify use and provide a high level of confidence in the connection.
