NLR installs fastest supercomputer in The Netherlands
Keywords National Aerospace Laboratory, Supercomputers
The National Aerospace Laboratory (NLR) in The Netherlands has installed an NEC SX-5/8 supercomputer with 64 GBytes of main memory and 64 GFlop/s of peak performance. The estimated position in the TOP 500 list is between 50 and 100 and this reportedly assures that NLR has the fastest supercomputer in The Netherlands. The NECSX-5 will replace the current SX-4 system, used for advanced engineering support in aerospace and related fields.
NLR and supercomputing
Increasing air traffic from growing air transport is impacting on the environment. It can conflict with environmental regulations and also adversely affect dense population areas around airports. For solving problems of this kind on time, large air tracking simulations and noise contour computations are required. The National Aerospace Laboratory NLR is the central institute for aerospace research in The Netherlands. NLR provides scientific and technical support to aerospace industries and organisations all over the world. NLR is a not-for-profit organisation.
