Welsh Trust Electronics is a privately-owned company which has been established for over 40 years. Traditionally the company's manufacturing covers four main areas: electronic component assembly, coil winding, cable forming and moulding small plastics components.

The company is mainly involved in the manufacture of PCBs for the aerospace industry with customers such as Racal, Lucas Aerospace, Dowty Hydraulics and Hitachi, which between them account for approximately 90 per cent of Welsh Trust Electronics' production.

The manufacturing processes include wiring, hand soldering, machine/hand termination, PCB assembly, flow soldering, encapsulation and light assembly.

The work tends to be in small batches, with electronic assembly being highly sophisticated and of a high quality standard to comply with the needs of the avionics industry.

The nature of the company's work produces solder fumes and smoke which must be removed. Increased production has required that fume and smoke extraction units be installed and recently Welsh Trust Electronics invited Nederman to recommend and install bench top extraction units.

Nederman, UK supplier of environmental equipment, supplied and installed the latest bench top system the TX3200 tip extraction solder/filter unit (Plate 5).

The unit is connected to 30 workstations and the fumes, smoke and gases are removed through the solder guns. With this system, constant vacuum is maintained regardless of the number of soldering stations. A remote control allows the operator to change the airflow mode and indicates when the filter needs to be changed.

The TX3200 tip extractor/filter unit is easy to install and needs little space.

It incorporates a long life filter and operates at a low noise level.

Commenting on the installation, Welsh Trust Electronics director Phil Pritchard said: "From the outset a very good relationship was established with Nederman's representatives and engineers who completed the installation of the system on time.

"On completion, the system was fully checked and adjusted and tested to COSHH requirements. A technical manual was also supplied.

"We're happy to say that to date we have had a trouble-free system which is popular with the operators who use it."
