2011 NACE International salary survey released

Salaries for corrosion professionals continued to climb in the last year according to a new Corrosion Career Survey conducted by NACE International’s Materials Performance magazine. Including salary and bonuses, average annual US compensation is $95,802, up 0.08 percent from 2010. In Canada the average compensation rose 1.5 percent to CAN$107,613. For the first time in 13 years, salary data were collected for European NACE members* with an average annual salary similar to their US counterparts at €67,281 (equivalent to approximately US $95,357).

Highlights of the survey include:

   Dominant industries represented by survey participants:

   • •

     United States – oil and gas pipelines/storage tanks (25 percent), coatings and linings (16 percent), natural gas utility (12 percent), and oil and gas extraction (8 percent).

   • •

     Canada – oil and gas pipelines/storage tanks (26 percent), coatings and linings (19 percent), and oil and gas extraction (14 percent).

   • •

     Europe – coatings and linings (21 percent), oil and gas pipelines/storage tanks (16 percent), engineering/architecture consulting (16 percent), and refining (13 percent).

   Most-held NACE certifications:

   • •

     United States: Coating inspector (CIP) level 1 (24 percent with an average annual salary of $87,218), corrosion technician (15 percent/$82,639 average annual salary), cathodic protection (CP) Tester (15 percent/$77,624average annual salary), and CIP level 3 – peer review (13 percent/$99,962 average annual salary).

     Canada: CIP level 1 (25 percent/$103,433 average annual salary), corrosion technologist (11 percent/$106,724 average annual salary), CP tester (11 percent/$99,483 average annual salary), and CIP level 3 – peer review (10 percent/$94,571 average annual salary).

     Europe: CIP level 2 (15 percent/€68,667 average annual salary), CIP level 1 (14 percent/€58,857 average annual salary), and CIP level 3 – peer review (13 percent/€67,308 average annual salary).

“Recognition of the corrosion control profession is increasing across many industries because NACE members are successfully communicating recommendations to financial decision-makers who recognize corrosion control actions are cost effective,” says Dr Oliver Moghissi, NACE International President and Director of the Det Norske Veritas Materials and Corrosion Technology Center in Columbus, Ohio. “The value of corrosion control professionals is increasingly evident; we expect their salaries will continue to increase in the future,” he adds.

Materials Performance magazine has conducted its annual corrosion career survey of NACE members since 1998.

The survey collects information on annual compensation, job duties, work experience, education level, company size, number of years in the profession, and challenges for today’s professionals. Survey results provide the latest details on demographics and salary levels for corrosion professionals in all fields of corrosion control.
