Bayer MaterialScience inaugurates Lab in India

Article Type: Industrial news From: Anti-Corrosion Methods and Materials, Volume 55, Issue 3.

Bayer MaterialScience inaugurated its Coatings and Adhesives Lab in Thane, India, on October 31, 2007. The objective of the lab is to strengthen the company's position in the polyurethanes coatings and adhesives market in India.

The new lab will primarily focus on application areas such as automotive OEMs, automotive refinishing, plastic coatings, protective coatings, wood finishes and general industrial coatings. In the second phase of development, the lab will be expanded to provide tailor-made solutions for adhesives and sealants in the transportation, construction, furniture, packaging and shoe industries.

Satish Shenoy, Country Representative for the coatings, adhesives and sealants business unit, Indian Subcontinent, commented, “Our target market in the short and medium term is the non- architectural coatings market, which is mainly the industrial, automotive, protective and wood coatings market segments. The total size of these market segments is approximately 280 KT. Out of this, approximately 8 percent is currently based on PU chemistry. Overall, these market segments are currently growing at 12-13 percent per annum. We intend to grow faster than the market, which can only happen if we convert coatings based on conventional and competing chemistries to PU.”

He added, “The long-term goals would include identifying new and innovative applications for PU coatings and adhesives and to increase awareness of the PU technology, as well as knowledge about products offered by Bayer MaterialScience. We would also like to use this lab to promote eco-friendly technologies like waterborne PU coatings and adhesives, UV Coatings, etc.”

The lab will function in close coordination with Bayer's application development labs in Germany (EMEA), Shanghai (APAC) and Japan to support the coatings and adhesives market in the Indian subcontinent. The Thane Application Development Lab is equipped with state-of-the-art testing, formulation and application equipment, meeting global standards and guidelines.
