SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings is participating in a two-year program to provide protective coatings training to Department of Defense personnel. Under the DoD Corrosion Prevention and Control Program, funding has been provided to train DoD, NASA and US Coast Guard personnel in the fundamentals of surface preparation and protective coatings. To date, over 75 DoD personnel have been trained by SSPC – more than any other provider of coatings training to the agency.

According to Daniel J. Dunmire, Director of Corrosion Policy and Oversight, Office of the Secretary of Defense, “Training is paramount to our successful fight against the insidious corrosion phenomenon”.

The DoD was mandated by Congress to develop a corrosion prevention and control program. This requirement created a need to train DoD personnel in the fundamentals of corrosion mitigation. Since, coatings is a critical component of corrosion prevention and control, the DoD contracted with SSPC for training because SSPC already had appropriate coatings training available.

The specific SSPC training courses covered by the contract are:.C-1.=Fundamentals of protective coatings for industrial structures..C-2.=Specifying and managing protective coatings projects.

The C-1 course introduces industry professionals to the fundamentals of proper preparation and coating of concrete and steel surfaces and structures. It also provides instruction on corrosion and the use of coatings as a protective mechanism against corrosion.

The C-2 course allows professionals to become proficient in managing protective coatings projects, including specifying coating systems, economic and business considerations as well as environmental and safety regulations.
