ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has entered into a joint venture with a Japanese company, Meidensha Corporation (MEIDEN), to produce surge arresters, used for the protection of power networks.

The new jointly-run company, MSA Co. Ltd, will produce gapless zinc oxide surge arresters. It will start with about 50 employees and is targeting annual revenues of about US$ 15 million.

ABB said the joint venture will provide improved access to the Japanese power transmission and distribution market.

ABB will grant MSA a license to use its state-of-the-art polymer surge arrester technology. MSA will use MEIDEN’s surge arrester development and production, and develop its own sales channel.
