NACE announcement from Elaine Bowman, Chair, Search Committee, NACE President 2002-2003

It is with very mixed emotions that I announce you that Jeff Littleton has submitted his resignation as executive director of NACE International, effective 4th March.

Jeff was appointed as interim executive director in June 2001, at a time of maximum stress in the organization. Our financial picture was bleak, our membership numbers were dropping, and our staff morale was very low, with an annual staff turnover of approximately 30 per cent. Within 3 months, and even with Jeff only in an “interim” capacity, we were seeing signs of major change, and the Board appointed Jeff as Executive Director in September 2001. Working very closely with the Board, Jeff has continued to work tirelessly for NACE International. Our financial position is currently stronger than ever, our membership is creeping back up to 15,000, we have many exciting projects in the works, and our staff turnover is virtually nil – all very good benchmarks for the job Jeff is doing.

However, when an executive director has this kind of track record, particularly in such a short timeframe, that person becomes a target who will be noticed. For over a year, Jeff has been contacted (“hounded” would be a more accurate word) by various executive search organizations, but he consistently dismissed such advances. However, in late 2003, an opportunity was presented to Jeff that he could not dismiss. Jeff was one of the long list of candidates targeted by a search firm on behalf of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Engineers (“ASHRAE”), a 55,000 member organization with headquarters in Atlanta. Through this long list of candidates, Jeff emerged on top, was offered and has accepted the position of executive vice-president (chief staff officer) of ASHRAE.

Although we are very sorry to lose Jeff as Executive Director of NACE International, we are excited for Jeff with this move in his career. In September 2001, Jeff inherited an organization with many problems and many areas of instability – he will be leaving NACE International strong and stable.

Please join me in wishing Jeff and his family all the best in their future endeavors.

The Board of Directors Operating Manual provides procedures for replacement of the executive director and developing a plan for interim management after Jeff's departure, which the executive committee will be following and reporting as progress permits.

Dear Administrative Committee Chairs and Vice Chairs: “As chair of the executive director Search Committee, we are pleased to announce the name of Mr Pierre Crevolin (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) as Interim Executive Director of NACE International.”

The NACE Board of Directors on 2 February 2004, approved the Search Committee's recommendation that Mr Crevolin be contracted as the Interim Executive Director commencing when his term as president of NACE expires after Corrosion 2004. Mr Crevolin has accepted this contract and will be in this position until a permanent executive director is hired, or 31 December 2004, whichever comes first.

The Search Committee currently begins the process of seeking out candidates for replacing Jeff Littleton as Executive Director.
