HSC approves updated list of hazardous substances occupational exposure limits

Keywords: Hazardous materials, Safety

The UK's Health and Safety Commission (HSC) has approved an updated list of occupational exposure limits for substances which may be hazardous to health. The limits came into force on the 31 December 2001 in the Health and Safety Executive's (HSE's) list of occupational exposure limits, EH40/2002.

The list contains Occupational Exposure Standards (OESS) and Maximum Exposure Limits (MELs). It implements in Great Britain the values from the 1st Indicative Occupational Exposure Limit Values (IOELV) Directive. Employers have a duty under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 1999 (COSHH) to control workplace exposure to hazardous substances, and HSC sets MELs and OESs to help them to do this.

The HSC has approved:

  • the recommendations by its Advisory Committee on Toxic Substances for 20 IOELV substances that were in Consultation documents (CD) 166 and 168; and

  • the proposed changes to the list of Maximum Exposure Limits (MELS) and OESs including OES proposals for hydrogen sulphide of 5 ppm (8-hour TWA) and 10 ppm (STEL) and previously agreed proposals for 24 IOELV substances.
