Coating Powders for Water Transportation

Keywords Coatings, Powder coatings, ATOFINA

Manufacturer of polyamide coating powders, ATOFINA is marketing Rilsan fine powders for the coating of metal pipes used in the treatment of drinking water. The company informs us that Rilsan coatings are highly durable (30 years), with a host of properties including resistance to abrasion, corrosion and impact, as well as excellent flexibility; they also have a very low friction coefficient which improves the flow of fluids.

Rilsan fine powders can reportedly be applied onto all types of components by dip- coating in a fluidised bed or by electrostatic spray, producing smooth and even coatings with a very attractive surface finish.

The coatings claim complete physiological non-toxicity, and safeguard the quality of the water. They meet the various regulatory requirements on the suitability of materials in contact with drinking water, and are now approved in many countries.

They are also said to be suitable for coating all components used in water treatment, pumping and transportation systems: pipes and fittings, valves, pumps, and flanges.

According to ATOFINA applications include the coating of sliding door rails in MPVs and commercial vehicles.

The coatings are made from polyamide 11 fine powders and are applied by electrostatic spray onto 4 of the 6 MPV rails that are particularly exposed to mechanical stress and chemical constraints. These coatings are also said to have sound-dampening effects and impart an attractive finish to the rails.

Rilsan fine powders have been used for over thirty years to coat splined transmission shafts in heavy goods vehicles. They are said to prevent jamming and can extend the shafts' lifetime by a factor of seven. They are also used to coat steering shafts, fluid transfer metal pipes, as well as gear box forks and springs.
