If your company chases averages they are wasting your time! According to financial analysts, Plimsoll Publishing, the only way to compete in the metal treatments industry is to compete on a "world class" scale.

Analysing the top echelon (12.5 per cent) of 281,037 UK companies, Plimsoll has located 127 companies in the metal treatments industry which are currently performing to a "world class" standard.

These companies are amongst the best in the UK and they are in your market! In essence this research proves that how your business performs has little to do with what you make or what you sell.

The Plimsoll Portfolio Analysis: Metal Treatments contains an individual analysis of 1,098 UK metal treatments companies, allowing the user to see the commercial advantages these 127 "world class" companies have over the rest.

"World class" companies are growing at 64 per cent per year. Remarkably, 17 metal treatments companies are currently beating this average. This came as quite a surprise, as the industry on average saw sales decline by 2.3 per cent.

"World class" pre-tax margin growth is 253 per cent on average. This looks spectacular compared to the metal treatments average decline in profits of 19.3 per cent. However, 38 companies in the industry have beaten this fantastic average.

"World class" average return on capital is an excellent 35 per cent. But the metal treatments industry should not be daunted by this, as 39 companies achieved this level of performance.

A key figure in any industry, the "world class" figure of £467,000 is enviable, but five metal treatments companies managed to beat this figure (see Table I).
