Joining forces to combat chloride retention
Joining forces to combat chloride retention
Keywords Corrocoat, Coatings, Corrosion prevention
Research into the causes of osmotic blistering in coating products has shown that chloride retention on the substrate is often the reason behind the problem. Apart from residual chloride, some of the abrasives used in blast cleaning processes contain certain soluble salts, which can have a detrimental effect upon the performance of long life coatings.
Coating specialists Corrocoat Ltd and Chlor Rid International Inc. report that they have joined forces to improve awareness of the issue and how to avoid the problem.
Chlor Rid's range of surface test kits and washing solutions will now be marketed under the combined Corrocoat Chlor*Rid name, and made available not only to Corrocoat applicators around the globe but also to any coating organisations wishing to reduce the incidence of osmotic blistering caused by chloride retention.
Manufactured in the USA, the Corrocoat Chlor*Rid washing solution is reported to use an organic bonding chemistry which aids in the removal of chlorides, sulphates and most other soluble salts. Developed for easy application using either handwashing techniques or wet abrasive blasting, Corrocoat Chlor*Rid can be used with standard pressure washing equipment.
The material is stated to be biodegradeable, non flammable and VOC-free, yielding immediate results. Corrocoat and Chlor Rid also offer three Corrocoat Chlor*Test kits, enabling applicators to determine the levels of retained chlorides on substrates prior to washing and coating. This range includes a chloride ion field test, a chloride ion test for abrasives and a chloride ion test for water/liquids.
