Roban Ductile Welding, one of the leading UK names in pressure pipeline systems and innovative ductile iron fittings for the water and allied industries, is the first major company to switch to Plascoat's PPA571ES corrosion protection coating following its recent DWI approval.

The Leicester-based company is to standardise on the Plascoat coating/lining across its entire range of Ductile iron push-fit flexible fittings for metric PVC potable water pressure pipelines – originally developed in close collaboration with Yorkshire Water.

The most comprehensive range of its kind in the UK, it includes all bends, hydrant duckfoots and tees, all socket tees, tapers, flange spigots and flange sockets. It is based on a flexible jointing system designed for rapid assembly and suitable for 16 bar working pressure.

Roban has made the coating switch from Fusion Bonded Epoxy to Plascoat PPA571ES following the DWI's approval of the electrostatic spray version of PPA571 for use in contact with water for drinking, washing, cooking or food production purposes.

The company's own trials are reported to have confirmed claims that PPA571ES offered higher levels of resilience and long-term adhesion, was easy to apply with no modifications to existing spray equipment required, and provided major cost benefits through a lower material density and energy savings accruing from lower application temperatures.

Says Roban managing director, Andrew Williams: "The switch to the Plascoat material has been well received by leading UK customers such as Yorkshire Water and East of Scotland Water and is key to our plans to develop markets in the rest of Europe, Africa and the Far East. We now feel able to meet any forseeable tightening of regulations, ensuring that the development of the PVC pressure pipeline market is not restricted by a lack of availability of components with a matched capability."

Applied directly on to cleaned substrate without the need for a primer, PPA571 is stated to have EC water industry approval and the specific support of the German and Belgian control agencies.
