Reference to technical data by buyers, designers and specifiers has been made easier by Swedish steel producer AB Sandvik Steel, which has transferred substantial amounts of its technical library to the Internet.

We found that the Sandvik Technical Data Web site provides instant access to the latest technical information on stainless steel, high alloys, titanium and special metals. Available on www.steel.sandvik.com, Sandvik has provided a user friendly and easily obtained source of technical data which the company is claiming is the most comprehensive on the World Wide Web for tubular, pipe, bar, hollow bar, fittings, strip, precision and welding wire products. Key elements, so far included, are corrosion tables, material data sheets and conversion data.

The corrosion tables, also contained in a 90-page manual, list 15 different carbon, stainless, duplex stainless steels and titanium and detail corrosion resistance for over 400 different additives, found in industrial processing, at varying concentrations and temperatures.

Each material specification is rated for each additive on a scale indicating a corrosion rate performance of less than 0.1mm/year up to over 1.0mm/year. In addition, where severe risks of pitting and crevice corrosion or stress corrosion cracking exist, these are specially highlighted.

Material data sheets for products in the Sandvik manufacturing range can be selected, either by product type or material grade. Each data sheet contains details of chemical composition, physical and mechanical properties, heat treatment, corrosion resistance, welding and bending criteria.

Other technical information includes useful conversion tables.

We understand that the Sandvik Technical Data Web site is part of an ongoing Sandvik policy of providing easy access to its technical information. We are also informed that it will be continually updated and expanded. The site includes an enquiry route to handle requests for further information.
