Jotun-Henry Clark Ltd, the UK member of the worldwide Jotun Paints group, has supplied protective coating systems for steelwork at the Lee Valley Leisure Centre, London.

The coating system selected for the main structure at the Lee Valley Leisure Centre consisted of one coat each of "Barrier" primer, "Penguard HB" epoxy, and "Hardtop AS" topcoat.

"Barrier" is a two-pack, zinc-rich epoxy primer for use on blast cleaned steel; it can be used in combination with most advanced coatings to increase durability. "Penguard HB" is a high-build, two-pack epoxy coating based on an epoxy resin with a high molecular weight, and is recommended as part of systems intended for extreme conditions. "Hardtop AS" is two-pack polyurethane topcoat with excellent gloss and colour retention; it produces a high gloss finish to epoxy systems for aggressive conditions.

Other steelwork at the leisure centre is protected by a system comprising one coat each of "Jotamastic 87 Aluminium", "Jotamatic 87 Grey" and "Hardtop AS".

Jotun Paints' epoxymastic coatings "Jotamastic 87" (colours), and "Jotamastic 87 Aluminium" are two-pack primer/topcoats with a high solids content. This allows the coatings to be applied in substantial single-coat thicknesses, although the company recommends application in a minimum of two coats to avoid "holidays" in the paint film.

"Jotamastic 87" formulations claims good resistance to water, solvents and many chemicals, and with a very low solvent content and no tar or isocyanate, have a low environmental impact. With good wetting and adhesion properties, they also claim good performance on steel surfaces that have been prepared by blasting or hydrojetting, or power tooled.
