Coating process for bolts

Elf Atochem has now developed a completely new coating process for bolts, shown for the first time at IWEX '97. TRILAN is a three-part process based on Elf Atochem and Atotech technology offering consistent and increased impact performance for bolt coatings.

The TRILAN bolt coating process consists of an:

  • Atotech special zinc plate.

  • Atotech colour passivation.

  • Elf Atochem Rilsan polyamide 11 top coat.

The new TRILAN process claims greatly improved impact performance for bolts compared with preceding generation coating processes as well as providing abrasion and corrosion resistance. Specific Atotech zinc plating and colour passivation processes have been selected to provide optimum compatibility and adhesion to the Rilsan top coat, thereby also ensuring a consistent coating performance. By specifying the complete TRILAN system, coaters reportedly can therefore achieve a consistent coating which offers exceptional impact resistance and is cost-efficient

For pipeline applications, Elf Atochem has also been developing Trisys three-layer coating systems to provide ultra long life, corrosion protective, impervious barriers for steel pipes in marine and other aggressive environments.

The "Trisys" coating system consists of a primer, a middle adhesive layer and a polyolefin topcoat and claims:

  • mechanical resistance to impact, penetration and abrasion;

  • impermeability to water and oxygen;

  • resistance to ageing (thermal, UV, micro-organisms);

  • adhesion to the pipe surface during application and under adverse service conditions (temperature, thermal shock, cathodic protection);

  • electrical insulation.

"Trisys" coated pipelines are believed to be suitable for use in the water industry and are already enjoying success in the transportation of oil and gas from the well-head to refinery.
