Electromagnetic testers can now prove their competence

Electromagnetic testers can now prove their competence

TWI Certification Ltd has launched a new central, independent certification scheme for operators of electromagnetic testing equipment.

The new scheme has taken two years to develop with significant support being given by experts in the offshore and underwater inspection industries.

Advances in electromagnetic testing techniques have resulted in the development and exploitation of new equipment for the detection of fatigue cracks in welded joints. Major oil and gas companies have conducted trials on the new equipment and found it to provide reliable and accurate results.

Several operators are now replacing conventional magnetic particle testing with the new electromagnetic testing techniques, particularly for the in-service inspection of offshore structures. The new equipment requires trained and qualified operators.

The new qualifications apply to two proprietary brands of equipment: Lizard EMA and ACFM. For each of these, two levels of certification are available, depending on the skill/knowledge required for the job. Individuals who have already undergone training on this equipment should immediately apply to TWI Certification Ltd, as they may be entitled to take advantage of a special dispensation with regard to eligibility for examination.

The scheme will provide assurance to clients and certifying authorities that inspection work using the new equipment is being done to the highest standards.

The scheme is part of the well established Certification Scheme for Welding and Inspection Personnel (CSWIP) and is accredited by the UK Accreditation Service (UKAS).

Examination requirements are set out in Document No. CSWIP-DIV-8-96 "Requirements for the certification of personnel engaged in electromagnetic inspection of welds Level 1 and Level 2".
