Special issue on Accounting for the public interest
The notion of accounting and the public interest has been used as a rhetorical trope within the accounting literature to motivate a wide range of studies examining the consequences of accounting within the public sphere. This special issue examines both what is meant by accounting and the public interest and how we can move forward in promoting an accounting for the public interest.
The special issue welcomes research that examines the contemporary and historical dimensions of accounting for the public interest. Accounting for the public interest, here, is broadly conceived to include the areas of financial and management accounting, auditing, governance, consulting and tax. Issues of importance include but are not limited to:
what do we mean by accounting for the public interest?
how does accounting shape, influence, mediate and constitute the public interest?
how does the relationship between accounting and the public interest vary across geographic and temporal settings?
what sort of research work should we, as academics, undertake to further our understanding of accounting and the public interest (i.e. what research topics have been ignored in the literature)?
what other activities should we engage in to encourage an accounting that is “for the public interest”?
