VIPA's system 500S PC based PLC with STEP®7

Article Type: New products From: Assembly Automation, Volume 28, Issue 2.

With OPC server, PG-/OP-Ethernet, Profibus-DP Master and optional CP343, VIPA's System 500S PLC adds total flexibility to PC-based automation.

The fastest STEP7 programmable PLC system available today is not from industry leaders Siemens but from its German-based nemesis VIPA.

The System 500S, PC based PLC (Figure 4) is part of a range of automation solutions from VIPA that are fully compatible with the Siemens STEP7 programming language but offer processing speeds that exceed the industry-leaders own products. Based upon SPEEDe7 technology, developed by VIPA's German sister company Profichip GmbH, the processing power of these ultra-fast CPU's exceeds 50K instructions in under 1ms. The System 500S offers a competitively priced solution with the convenience of PCI bus interfacing and features integral Ethernet for PG-/OP communication, Profibus-DP Master, MPI-Interface, OPC Server and the optional CP343 interface for advanced Ethernet processing applications.

Keeping costs to a minimum, a range of 500S CPU's are available with integrated programming and data memory from 256 to 512kB to match application requirements. Optional MCC memory cards from 32kB to 8MB ensure that automation solutions may be adapted and expanded if required.

The System 500S includes the world- wide OPC standard for data exchange between software and components to guarantee that integration with third- party products and SCADA-based systems is both fast and trouble free.

The Profibus-DP Master interface allows connection of up to 125 slave devices from VIPA's own range of modules or with third party modules to suit the most complex processing and data intensive applications.

The German manufactured System 500S may be programmed with VIPA's own WinPLC7™ with hardware configuration and diagnosis tools included for Profibus-DP and Ethernet networking. Alternatively, the 500S will run complete STEP7 software and associated tools. Users who are concerned about combined product issues are assured that VIPA and its partners are able to offer technical support for mixed systems. Furthermore, without the need to retrain STEP7 programmers and automation system designers, minimal cost to switch to VIPA's ultra-fast SPEED7 technology is assured.

Also available with SPEED™7 technology is VIPA's DIN rail mounted System 300S PLC for centralised and decentralised automation applications covering a wide range of ultra-high speed processors with scalable memory configurations that can be flexibly and economically matched with modules from both VIPA and Siemens with complete hardware pin compatible with S7-300 components.
