A device and a method for performing remote diagnostics of the electrical, mechanical and mechatronic components of vehicles are presented. It aims to provide diagnosis even in the case of complicated vehicle defects and/or vehicle defects which are difficult to find, and thereby reduce the time required for a service technician to find and recover the problem. If necessary, this can be enhanced by real time access to an external database and/or by involving a service centre so that the non-operational times in the event of a fault are minimized.
