Electric linear actuators now offer IP65 protection against harsh environments

Keywords: Actuators

Unimatic's range of Electro-Thrust electric linear actuators now includes IP65 rated versions for use in harsh operating conditions, such as applications where frequent washdowns are required, or where the cylinders are exposed to the elements or to contaminated environments (Plate 4).

Electro-Thrust cylinders are built around high quality C7 class ballscrews, and provide stroke lengths up to 2,400 mm and thrust forces in excess of 44,000 N. Repeatability across the range is better than ±0.013 mm, and the actuators offer speeds up to 1 m/s. The actuators are characterised by a high mechanical efficiency of up to 90 per cent.

The long cylinder rod bearing allows high side load forces to be applied with less bearing deflection, whilst the angular contact bearings at the drive end are designed to accommodate high axial and radial forces. A polymer bearing supports the front end of the ballscrew, eliminating vibration and run-out, so improving the positioning accuracy and extending screw life. A precision anti-rotate mechanism virtually eliminates rod endplay and noise, and ensures smooth operation.

The standard Electro-Thrust range covers 32, 50, 80, 100 and 125 mm frame sizes, with IP65 sealing available on all, but the largest version. Features of the IP65 rated actuators include a polyester/polyurethane coated cylinder body, a high performance dual piston rod seal, external fixings in stainless steel, and optional stainless steel rod ends and cylinder mountings.

All sizes of the Electro-Thrust cylinder are now supplied with an access port for direct lubrication of the ballnut, simplifying maintenance in the field.

Unimatic's team of application engineers can provide complete customised solutions, incorporating products from its wide range of stepper and servo motors, drives, controls and HMIs.
