More options in available electronics including dedicated gauging displays, gauging software and interfaces for PCs mean that the newly introduced HEIDENHAIN SPECTO range of length gauges can be used in a greater variety of gauging applications (Plate 4).

HEIDENHAIN SPECTO length gauges were recently introduced to compliment the METRO and CERTO ranges of length gauges, and are aimed more at multi-axis gauging stations. Key features of SPECTO include:

  • slim design and small overall dimensions (13 mm diameter body) – allowing a high packing density,

  • long traverse lengths with high accuracy (0-12 mm and 0-30 mm traverse with ±1 µm accuracy, allowing a single fixture to be used for a "family" of parts,

  • sturdy construction – for shop floor and calibration room use,

  • pneumatic and spring loaded plunger activation – to allow for automated gauge operation.

The GAGE-CHEK measured value displays from Metronics enable the connection of four or eight SPECTO incremental encoders. They can save, interrogate, manage, and mathematically gate the measured values. A large number of functions support comprehensive statistical process control (SPC). The colour flat-panel display shows statistical evaluations and pass/fail results in easy-to-read and unambiguous screens. The measured values and evaluations can be transferred over the interfaces to a printer or a higher-level computer.

Alternatively, connection of HEIDENHAIN SPECTO gauges directly to a PC is provided by the IBRit-de8 multi-axis interface, which can connect up to 64 incremental or analog measuring devices. The flexible ComGage evaluation software from IBR can be adapted to suit varied applications and features interfaces to standard software such as QS-STAT, Excel, and others.
